Harriet Ribot, a resident of Winchester Gardens, a Springpoint Life Plan Community, recently had her very first book published at the age of 95.
Ribot’s Ember is described as “an enjoyable, easy read. She mixes serious wisdom with lighthearted humor, using rhyme and meter to charm her readers. The poet’s thoughts and ironies are offered with insight as moments that occur in every woman’s life.”
Ember was released by Kelsay Books back in March.
Ribot says that despite age, it feels wonderful to accomplish something like this. It’s validating to be recognized by peers and to feel like she now has a voice.
She also collated the works and biography of composer Frantz Casseus into a book of sheet music for solo guitar: The Complete Works of Frantz Casseus (Tuscany Publications, 2003).
Ember is the first of a three book poetry series. The other two – Willow Tree and Dormant – were later published by Finishing Line Press.
Born in Brooklyn, Ribot moved around a lot before settling in Essex County. Along with being a registered nurse and receiving a B.A. from Rutgers University-Newark, she later became an entrepreneur/at-home designer and eventually sold her designs to Bloomingdales. In her spare time Ribot likes to read, and she belongs to a poetry appreciation group. She also has another book in the works, a compilation of short stories. These stories are about Ribot’s observations with the people around her, and “getting to [better] be me.”
