Making the move to a Life Plan Community is an exciting decision. But with so many choices available, how will you know what community is the right fit for you?

While there are a variety of ways for you to do your initial research on communities, including online searches and talking to trusted friends and family members, there is no substitute for experience when it comes to making the final decision. And the best way to get a feel for what life is like at a community is through a tour.

In order to get the most out of your tour at a senior independent living community, take inventory of what the most important things are for you to find out while you’re there and create a list of questions. To get you started, we at Winchester Gardens have pulled together a list of commonly asked questions that you may want to ask.

Questions to Ask the Senior Living Team During Your Tour

What kind of amenities do you offer?

When choosing your future home, you want to be sure it is a good match for how you like to live and what you like to do. Ask about the full range of social, educational and cultural activities offered within the community. Typical offerings include creative classes, fitness areas, guest lectures and more.

Will I receive adequate care?

Although you may not be in need of healthcare services at the moment, it’s important to ask if your future needs will be taken care of. Access to healthcare is vitally important for your wellbeing.

Is the staff caring and knowledgeable?

Staff members at a senior living community become more like family. Look into credentials and ask current residents about their relationships.

How is the dining?

You’ll be eating plenty of meals in the dining area, so ask about the quality and nutrition of the food. If you have a special dietary concern, ensure you will be accommodated. Some communities, like Springpoint, even offer to have you stay for lunch to get a taste of the dining experience.

What is the emergency plan?

Should the need arise, you’ll want to know that there is an emergency preparedness and safety plan. Although this will hopefully not have to be used, knowing that situations have been thought through and mapped out is reassuring and a sign of the credibility of the community.

Can I afford the community?

Of course, the most common question to ask when looking into a independent living communities for seniors: is the lifestyle and services available within my means? Sales counselors are willing to talk you through your unique financial situation and find a plan that works the best for you.

May I see more than one floor plan?

Life Plan Communities most commonly offer apartment-style living, with sizes ranging from studios to two-bedrooms, all in a variety of floor plans. When touring, ask to see more than one floor plan to get a better feel of the space you need.

What is the quality of life?

The best way to learn about a senior living community is through the residents who currently reside there. Speak to a few and ask them how they’ve enjoyed their experience and what they like most about the community.

Remember: there is no question too absurd when it comes to confirming comfort in your potential new home. Once you’re done with your tour, imagine yourself in the community. Really step back, take in all that you have learned, and picture yourself walking through the hallways or settling in for the night in an apartment. Getting a taste of what your life could be like by visiting the community will help in your decision-making process.
