Check Out These NYC Museums and Theaters that Offer Senior Discounts

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York at night

A trip to New York City is a delight at any age. With so much to see and do, you can keep discovering new favorites even when you’ve been exploring the city for decades. In fact, many retirees who once called NYC home now live a short distance away from all the lights and action but make frequent daytrips to enjoy the world-famous dining, theater, and shopping options.

New York visits can be especially appealing for seniors who have plenty of free time and an appetite for entertainment. Many attractions even welcome retirees with attractive senior discounts and incentives. For example, you can find senior discount theater tickets in NYC and senior discounts to NYC museums you’ve always wanted to visit (or the ones you enjoy visiting again and again).

Top Senior-Friendly Destinations in NYC

Many of NYC’s leading destinations offer senior-friendly programming, either through special activities on site or through partnerships with area senior living communities. In addition, seniors can take advantage of discounted prices at these popular attractions:

9/11 Museum and Memorial: Through media, personal stories, and artifacts, this site allows visitors to reflect upon the losses sustained in terrorist attacks in 2001 and 1993, while contemplating the significance of these events decades later. Tickets to the museum are offered five days a week, with senior discounts available.

American Museum of Natural History: In addition to the permanent museum halls, rotating exhibitions and films make each visit brand-new.  General admission tickets (which offer access to limited areas) are available on a “pay what you wish” basis for residents of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, but you can take advantage of senior discounts to explore more of the museum, including the current exhibitions and films.

Central Park Zoo: One of the oldest zoos in the country, Central Park Zoo sprawls over seven acres with popular animal exhibits like sea lions, snow leopards, penguins, and more. Seniors ages 65 and older receive a discount on their ticket price, which includes the main zoo, Tisch Children’s Zoo, and the 4-D Theater.

Metropolitan Museum of Art: Known more casually as The Met, this museum’s collection spans more than 3 million pieces across 5,000 years. Seniors receive a discounted ticket price for a one-time visit, but memberships are also available that include unlimited admission for the member and a guest.

Museum of Modern Art: Diversity and inclusion are primary tenets of this museum that encourages visitors to explore the intersection of contemporary art, ideas, and issues. With current identification, seniors can purchase daily tickets at discounted prices. If you visit multiple times a year, memberships offer benefits including free admission, access to members-only hours, exhibit previews, and more.

New York Show Tickets: Enjoy Broadway shows at discounted matinee prices (as much as 50% off regular rates) when you plan a midweek afternoon outing. Originally created specifically for seniors, tickets are now open for all ages, making it a great option for taking in a show when family visits.

Theater Development Fund: If you’re a big supporter of performing arts, you may benefit from becoming a TDF member. This nonprofit organization offers membership to a limited group (including non-working retirees who are at least 62). The nominal annual fee gives you access to steeply discounted ticket deals on Broadway and beyond.
